Earplugs at the ready, kids. It's a New Heavy Sounds night tonight. And they're not kidding around with that name.

The lead singer of Limb is in a right old strop. At any rate, he bellows and fumes and rants at us while the band make a suitably belligerent noise. It's a heavyweight sludge thing, all down-tuned guitars and drums that sound like a load of concrete being dumped on your driveway.

But there's structure in there, too, a hint that for all their low-end grumbling Limb are not averse to a bit of classic rock. On the back of the singer's denim jacket, I spy a Lynyrd Skynyrd patch. Now there's an unexpected influence, and a bit of a giveaway, too. Is the world ready for doomcore boogie?

If you call your band We Rock Like Girls Don't, you're going to have to justify it. In particular, you're going to have to justify the view - implicit in the name - that girls don't rock. But We Rock Like Girls Dont are girls, so they're either betraying the sisterhood, or they're being ironic. Now my head hurts, and the band haven't even come on yet.

Ah, here they are: a drums 'n' guitar duo, kicking up a ruckus, playing it fast and loud. The drums clatter like furniture falling downstairs, the guitar sets up a right old rifftastic fuss. It's not a million miles away from PJ Harvey at her most cranked-up: they even do that PJ Harvey-esque thing of taking it down a bit for a line or two of vocal, then piling back in with loads of revved-up guitar and a renewed drum assault.

Just as well they do that, really, because the vocals are rather buried at the bottom of the racket, a plaintive keen struggling to be heard through the guitar 'n' drum storm. Someone needs to shove the fader up a bit on the mixing desk. Or just put a bit more of a Courtney Love holler into the vocals. But there's no doubting the overall noise. We Rock Like Girls Don'

I suspect that if you advanced the theory that girls don't rock to Black Moth's singer, she would fix you with a withering stare and you'd crumble on the spot. Black Moth, at any rate, are definitely, unequivocally, I-shit-you-not, a rock band. If they were any more rock, they'd be geology.

They've tapped into that down 'n' dirty seventies Sabbaaaff sound, and while it's a bit disconcerting to find the gritty, grubby, grime-encrusted heavy rock sound of thirty-odd years ago Black Moth reproduced with such finesse by people who are (surely) two decades too young to ever have experienced it in its pomp, the fact remains that Black Moth have it nailed.

The riffs are crunchy like cornflakes before you've put the milk on. The drums are spare and loose, and there's plenty of clattering going on in the cymbal department. The singer gives it the full Janis Joplin.

It's easy to spot the influences, obvious where the band are coming from - but Black Moth have such assurance about what they do, and such an unrepentantly gleeful swagger about them as they power through their set with everything on eleven, that you can't help but dig it.

And, frankly, if we're going to have rock bands on this planet, I'd much rather they were like Black Moth - disarmingly audacious in their heaviosity - than half the goshawful groaners that inhabit the heavy zone. Moth it up, that's what I say.
